TPACK Lesson Plan

Grade Level: 1st Grade
Learning Outcomes: Students will solve real-world mathematical problems using addition.

Introduction: The teacher will introduce addition facts with a YouTube video- “Lets learn our addition Facts 1- Addition song for kids- Math for children- Jack Hartmann. The teacher will demonstrate examples using the smartboard. The students will learn new terms that are about addition such as addends, sum, altogether, add, total, and more. The students will then get to go to the whiteboard and work on real-world problems using addition. Then they will split up into 3 groups.

Direct Instruction:
Teacher-led- the students will each get a worksheet- Number Line Addition. As a group, they will work together. The instructor will guide them with the first addition problem. The teacher will then go around the group and have each student do a part of the addition problem. The teacher will check if students are following and understanding.

Independent- the students will work on IXL Math- First Grade level: Addition. Each student will need to get as far as they can until the timer goes off. The teacher will be able to see the progress and where a student may be needing more help.

Listening Center- The students will go to the smartboard and play ABCya. The students will need to get a small whiteboard to write down addition facts if they get stuck on a problem. They may need to draw a picture or use a number line to figure out the answer to the addition facts.

Assessment: The students will be assessed with a Number Line worksheet from Education.com. The students will have to listen to 4 real-world questions and finish the rest of the addition facts on their own.

Reflection:
1. How well the use of this technology may support your teaching strategies in this activity?
Technology is very useful for my teaching strategies. Math is an activity in which technology has many applications that can help students achieve a goal. YouTube is a great visual tool to use for those students that learn that way. ABCya and IXL are fun games that will help students understand a lesson.

2. How effectively the use of this technology may enhance students' understanding of and learning from your particular content in this activity?
The smartboard is an interactive activity that gets students involved and moving. The teacher can make the slides with what she or he sees important. The other technology stategies are for those visual learners. It helps them stay on task and learn important math facts. IXL is also a great way to keep the progress of each student. The teacher can review their results and figure out a way to help those that struggle in an area.

3. What are your strategies and why do you think your strategies are appropriate to teaching this specific content?  What makes you believe it would help your students comprehend this particular content? Give specific examples from your described activity?
I believe the Number Line Addition worksheet I have students do in a group is appropriate because it is a one to one with students. It can be like an individual assessment to see if a student needs more help in an area. The ABCya game it is appropriate for students because it goes over addition facts and helps students be more fluent. IXL will help students because it will be something they did at the beginning of the lesson. It will be a review and they would have had an idea of how it works.

4. What would be some conceptions and pre-conceptions that students of different ages and backgrounds bring with them when learning this particular content? What would you be concerned about students' prior knowledge, experiences, motivation? Again focus on the content and your teaching strategy, not the technology!
Some students may barely be entering school and may not know their numbers, thus not being able to add. These students would have to have worksheets with activities they can do on their level. Other students may seem like they know what the lesson is but can be guessing. That is the importance of assessments.

5. What main instructional strategies would this technology use serve in your activity? How would using the technology support the way you teach this activity? Please give examples and be specific to your described activity. Think about your main teaching strategies that this technology would support.
The technology would help me with this math lesson the majority of the time. The smartboard helps students get a visual but get involved in doing showing the work on the board. The applications help students get more practice and show the teacher what they learned.

6. What different classroom management strategies you might need to consider when using this technology in the activity? Give examples and be specific to your described activity.
For the ABCya game I will need them to show me the problems they worked on, so they won't just be messing around. I will teach them how to get back on the application in case it kicks them out.

7. How would using this technology enhance the way the content is represented in your activity (e.g. demonstrations, explanations, examples, illustrations, analogies, and etc.)? That is why you think the selection and the pedagogical use of this technology may enhance what you teach (the content in your activity). Give specific examples from your activity to support your answer and keep in mind the learning objectives that you stated previously.
Many students learn with technology and I think this will be an advantage for the teacher to use in the classroom. YouTube is a great source to explain a lesson that has great instruction and visual effects that catch the students attention.

8. In what different ways students practice or understand the content in your activity that would otherwise not be possible without the use of the technology? In addition to motivational benefits, what else can students do with this technology as they are learning the content?
I think worksheets are good to use in the classroom but it shouldn't be just worksheets to teach. Technology is a great resource to use and it has many benefits to see progress. The era of worksheets and only teacher talking is not enough now in days.
